A Healthy Bunny is a Happy Bunny!

For the past couple of days or so, our Netherland Dwarf bunny Samuel ("Sam") has been sneezing and weezing with a runny nose. So this afternoon, I left work early in order to take him to our trusty vet, Dr. Ostrich at Eagle's Peak Animal Clinic.

Turns out that he has a respiratory infection and needed meds and so Dr. Ostrich gave us a prescription for an antibiotic called sulfatrim in a liquid form. We must give it to him in a syringe twice a day.

I had a feeling that was what the issue may have been as many years ago, our Mini Lop bunny Barney, had one as well. But instead of a liquid medication, we were given rather large pills which were very hard to adnminister. So, how exactly does one give a rabbit pills? Well, since the pills would not dilute in water and we were afraid to give it to him the way in which you can give a cat or dog meds using a pill popper, we broke it up in tiny pieces and mixed it in with a very small bowl of rabbit pellets so that he would in gest it all in one sitting. It worked!

To be honest, it was actually a relief to find out that what he had was treatable. Rabbits are not known for having the strongest of constitutions and even though you may keep your bunny indoors as we always have sometimes all it takes is a draft to get them sick. Hopefully now, he is on his way to making a full recovery!

Finally finished!

Today marks Midnight's sixth and final Laser Treatment Therapy session. Each session takes only 2 1/2 minutes (dogs take between 45 minutes to and hour) and he has been responding so well to them thus far. From here on in, he is only scheduled for a once a month session unless otherwise needed. It has helped him a great deal with his arthitis pain and I would most definately recommend it to anyone. Although the only down side is that our kitty absolutely hates car rides and does not travel well. The worst part of taking him to the vet is getting him from our house to there. Once he is there, he is much calmer, and after he gets home again, he is great!

It is hard to believe that only a couple of weeks ago, he could not even turn his back to groom himself and we could not so much as touch his backside without him crying in pain. Now, he is pain-free and flexible again ...

He had developed a respiratory infection from taking him back and forth for two weeks in this horrible cold winter weather. A few days ago, the vet gave him an antibiotic shot and it did very little. So now he is on oral meds ~ one pill three times a day and it seems to be helping as he is not sneezing near as much. It is highly possible that he lowered his immune system quite a bit by stressing himself out during the car trips back and forth to the vet. But, hopefully he will get over his cold now that he (and us!) have some down-time. He can rest and stay warm in the house for another whole month.
